Products
- How does your company benefit the Artisans?
Having been born and brought up in Bolivia I understand the financial and political situation in Bolivia. For example, there is no National Health Service and no form of government subsidy for people out of work. As a result the people who are able to work also have to support those who can’t, such as the elderly and infirm. Incallajta provides a regular and reliable income which helps not only the producers themselves but their families and communities.
Incallajta is not a charity, but it is dedicated to promoting Fair Trade. It pays producers fairly for the skill and effort involved in their work, and it helps the craftsmen in Bolivia to keep important cultural traditions alive. In buying these products you are helping to support the craftsmen and women in Bolivia who have the responsibility for the health, education, and well-being of their families. In particular, a regular family income means that children can complete their schooling rather than having to work to contribute financially to the family.
Most Bolivian crafts come from the Andes (although some are from the rainforest), where farming is the main source of income. These indigenous communities have managed to maintain many of their traditional skills such as weaving and they often rely on alternative forms of income, such as handicrafts. However, due to the economic crisis it is currently very difficult to sell these goods within Bolivia, which is why the income provided by Incallajta is so important to its producers. It enables the craftspeople to gain a degree of financial security and independence, allows them to make choices for themselves and their families, and helps to maintain centuries-old traditions.
During my occasional trips home to see my family I have met many of the artisans personally, and I know how painstakingly they work to produce these beautiful objects. It is only right that they are well rewarded for their work and skill.
- Who makes the products you sell? All of my products are hand made by individual crafts men and women known in Bolivia as Artisans. If you would like to learn more about these highly gifted individuals please look on the site under ‘About the Atrisans’.
